Ingeniously simple… but good enough?

Today, in the pursuit of a free version of SQL Prompt, I visited Red-Gate Software

I noticed their slogun “ingeniously simple tools”. SQL Prompt was of course not free (why would I even believe that?), so I did not find what I initially was looking for. Instead I spent a couple of minutes looking at the other tools they were offering. Tools for SQL refactoring, profiling, documentation, diff etc. In my opinion a quite useful lot of SQL utilities.

Then I decided to move over to their forum - and this was what I got:

Redgate Error

So, maybe I’m wrong on this one, but “ingeniously simple” doesn’t have to mean it’s “good enough”.

Take a look at SQL Assistant tool http://www.softtreetech.com/isql.htm . In regard to boosting developer productivity, SQL Prompt is no match to SQL Assistant, not to mention that SQL Prompt is really unusable in large databases and is also limited to SSMS and MS QA and cannot be used with other SQL editors. In comparison, SQL Assistant is fast and doesn’t cache your entire database on a local disk and works with many editors and IDEs

Hi Petter, I don’t think we’ll ever be ‘good enough’, because we’ll always try and improve :)
Sorry you had trouble with the forums - they seem to be fine now. Just out of curiosity, where did you see an offer for free SQL Prompt? I believe V1 was free because it was not up to standard, and we were busy rebuilding it from the ground up for V2!

If you’re interested (and you’re willing to brave the forums again), we’ve got an EAP / Beta build of V4 you can play with for free… http://www.red-gate.com/MessageBoard/viewtopic.php?t=8993

    Cheers,
    Chris
